Local Quantum Corporation distributor, Memtek-MMW has announced the availability of the Quantum DLTtape Group`s Roadmap for its new-generation DLTtape technology, set to ensure continuity of Super DLT products in the future.
The new Roadmap, which extends to 2007, takes DLTtape technology through four generations to a capacity of 1.2TB on a single cartridge.
Says Gary Naidoo, product manager: storage at Memtek-MMW: "Quantum`s Roadmap will keep Super DLT capacity and speed growing fast enough to allow IT departments to stay ahead of increases in the amount of critical data being generated through business initiatives such as e-commerce and data warehousing. The new Roadmap will also help businesses to ensure protection of mission-critical information, and maintain access to data archived on previous-generation tapes."
The new product takes DLTtape technology to a native capacity of 1.2TB (2.4TB compressed) on a single cartridge, with a transfer rate of over 100MBps. For comparison, 1.2TB of storage capacity is the equivalent of more than 300 digitised feature-length films on one cartridge that is about half the size of a videocassette tape. The first generation Super DLT drive, the SDLT 220, has a per-cartridge capacity of 110GB and runs at 11MBps.
"By 2007, Super DLT drives will have the ability to accommodate more than a terabyte of data on a single cartridge in just over three hours," comments Naidoo. "Customers want to know that the tape platform they depend on and are investing in, is extendable for several generations into the future. The new DLTtape product Roadmap delivers that confidence."
Rapid increases in Super DLT capacity are made possible by Quantum`s patented technology, including Laser Guided Magnetic Recording (LGMR). This substantially increases the number of recording tracks and recording density by providing optical guiding tracks on the back (non-recording) side of the tape.
The next major milestone on the Roadmap is the introduction of the SDLT 320, with initial shipments scheduled for the end of this year or sooner. The SDLT 320 will deliver 160GB of native storage and a transfer rate of 16MBps, a 45% increase in both capacity and speed over the SDLT 220. Subsequent product launches are scheduled at intervals of approximately 18 months.
