Supported Software brings backup, asset management to mobile PCs

Supported , the infrastructure optimisation company in the JSE-listed DataCentrix group, has announced the general availability of Sterling Software`s SAMS:Lifeguard, software which provides automatic, seamless backup of remote and mobile PCs.

"SAMS:Lifeguard enables IS managers to extend the reach of corporate backups and information to include remote, mobile and desktop PCs," says Phil Coombs, product manager for Sterling Software at Supported Software. "This allows management to regain control of critical corporate data and to manage the distributed assets of the entire enterprise."

SAMS:Lifeguard uses Sterling`s patent-pending change detection process, to provide an automated means to back up and restore data. "Rather than transmitting and storing entire files, SAMS:Lifeguard detects, records, transmits and stores only the specific bytes of changed data for each file," says Coombs. "This can result in hundreds of hours per year in saved data transmission and staff time, reduced data storage costs and an efficient means of business and disaster recovery."

The SAMS:Lifeguard back-up operation is "automatic and invisible"` so users can focus on their work, avoiding normally time-consuming backup operations. File retrieval can be accomplished using a remote, mobile or desktop PC, achieving complete data recovery. Updated hardware and software configuration information on every PC improves system asset management.

SAMS:Lifeguard`s Auto TCP/IP feature is designed to automate the SAMS:Lifeguard Client by monitoring TCP/IP connections. Remote and mobile users can synchronise SAMS:Lifeguard with other business tasks that use TCP/IP connections.

"This allows users to login simultaneously to their company intranet, e-mail server or access the Internet while sending SAMS:Lifeguard backups and data transmissions," adds Coombs. "IS managers can pre-set the Auto TCP/IP configuration or have the clients set it after installation."

SAMS:Lifeguard`s Auto Client Installer software enables network managers to configure, distribute, and install SAMS:Lifeguard Client software on mobile and remote PCs.

Network managers can customise settings for individual or standard settings for groups of SAMS:Lifeguard clients and distribute via e-mail to all clients. "All the client needs to do on receipt of the e-mail is double-click the attached, self-extracting file which automatically installs in a pre-designated area on the client`s local disk drive.
