Surge in notebook sales boosts Acer

Johannesburg, 20 Jan 2004

PC vendor Acer has made substantial upward adjustments to its forecasts for financial 2003, thanks mainly to better than expected notebook sales in Europe in the final quarter of last year.

Worldwide, Acer shipped 970 000 units of notebooks in the fourth quarter to achieve a new quarterly record. This represents growth of almost 100% year-on-year.

According to the International Corporation, Acer ranked number five for notebooks worldwide in the third quarter of 2003, which also represents the highest ranking for Acer to date.

The group says it plans to roll-out a series of innovative notebook products this year, with a particular focus on aggressive expansion in China and the US.

The group recorded consolidated revenues of $539.96 million in November (November 2002: $346.34 million). This is a record high for Acer and was the third successive month-on-month increase.

It is now forecasting full-year consolidated revenue of $4.4 billion, 15.87% higher than the previous forecast of $3.87 billion.

"The adjustments in revenue were attributed to the better than expected notebook sales by Acer in Europe in the final quarter of last year, while the rise in Acer Europe`s operating income also contributed significantly to that of the company as a whole," says MD David Drummond.

Acer is forecasting after-tax profit of $212.19 million for the 2003 financial year. This compares with a previous forecast of $175.61 million.
