Sweden`s ABB Infosystems consolidates 18 storage systems to two EMC Enterprise Storage Systems

EMC Multiplatform Enterprise Storage Systems and Software Provide Control and Flexibility for Critical Business Information @Story = EMC Corporation announced today that ABB Infosystems, the Vasteras, Sweden-based information technology company within ABB Sweden, has migrated all its mainframe storage capacity from 18 separate storage systems to two EMC Symmetrix 5700 Enterprise Storage Systems. ABB Infosystems previously relied on Hitachi 7700, IBM 3990, and STK Iceberg 9200 equipment, among others. ABB Infosystems used EMC`s Symmetrix Data Migration Services (SDMS) to move 50% of all data from its previous storage equipment to EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems. The migration was performed with no disruption to applications running in production mode. "SDMS was a tremendously simple and fast way to move data from different systems onto Symmetrix," said Kyrre Klang, Manager of Server Technology for ABB Infosystems. "SDMS allowed us to move 550 GB over to Symmetrix in a total of 8 hours. We estimate it would have taken several months if we had relied on traditional methods." Another EMC business continuance solution, Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) software, provides ABB Infosystems with comprehensive information availability and disaster recovery capabilities. The Symmetrix systems are each located in two separate data centers, which communicate via SRDF and fiber optics links. SRDF enables ABB Infosystems to maintain a continuously updated mirrored copy of its production data at a remote data center. "With SRDF, we can now guarantee our customers full recovery of operations in two hours if one of the data centers suffers a severe downtime event," explained Klang. "When we used to rely on tape backup for disaster recovery, it took several days before we could bring our systems back up." "Our customers are placing more importance on continuous availability of systems," continued Klang. "EMC`s Symmetrix mirroring and remote maintenance capabilities combined with SRDF have enabled us to provide maximum availability to our customers." "The advanced software and ability of EMC Symmetrix to support every major computing platform gives us much more flexibility and control of our vital information assets," noted Klang. "EMC also provides major improvements in system performance and availability than our previous mixed storage environment. Now that we`ve consolidated our mainframe data, we`re planning the next phase of our information overhaul. ABB Infosystems expects to implement EMC enterprise storage to our open systems to complete the consolidation effort." ABB Infosystems will also use EMC Symmetrix 5700 systems to test its applications software for Year 2000 compliance. Using the mirrored copy of data on the Symmetrix system located at ABB Infosystems` remote data center in Vasteras, ABB Infosystems is able to perform full-scale testing and systems management during normal business hours -- while applications remain running. Before, ABB Infosystems was limited to testing applications at nights and on weekends. "Businesses on a global scale are consolidating their storage assets to respond more quickly and flexibly to their constantly changing information requirements," said Jim Rothnie, EMC`s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Technical Officer. "EMC`s advanced enterprise storage systems and software solutions are able to stay ahead of this trend by providing industry leaders like ABB with superior information management, availability and connectivity capabilities."
