Johannesburg, 11 Oct 2001

Sybase has launched its flagship database manager, Adaptive Server Enterprise(ASE)12.5, in SA.

[VIDEO]Speaking at the official launch in Hyde Park this week, the visiting Sybase technical director of Server Technology, Sethu Meenakshisundara, highlighted the ASE 12.5 enhancements that enable companies to make an intelligent transition to e-business.

These include groundbreaking advances in XML/XQL and EJB management, dynamic tuning to address the unpredictable nature of Internet-based computing and ensures mission-critical applications perform as expected, and enhanced security features. The improved security includes row-level access control and encrypted communications to protect valuable while ensuring extended access to employees, customers and partners.

[VIDEO]Sybase recently announced record benchmark results for its ASE 12.5, beating Oracle by delivering 95% more throughput at less than one-third of the cost. The benchmark demonstrated Sybase's price/performance for Unix-based systems, as measured by the Transaction Process Performance Council's TPC-C results. These results were accomplished using the rp8400 Server from Hewlett-Packard.

ASE 12.5 achieved 140 239.97 transactions per minute (tpmC) with a price/performance ratio of $16.31/tpmC utilising the recently announced HP Server rp84001.

[VIDEO]"ASE has got all the features that you need to do your e-business. It is low on cost, runs on all platforms, it's easy to use and provides the best return on investment. It is basically the best system in the world," Meenakshisundara says.

[VIDEO]Meenakshisundara says Sybase is embarking on major marketing drives to support its key database business. "We are going to grow this business by 10% this year. To achieve this, we will work with ISPs, technology partners and customers to help them with database issues."
