Sybase South Africa has announced that Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) now supports the Sun Cluster 3.0 software active-passive agent, expanding the offering to include active-passive support along with active-active support. Customers now can choose the optimal solution to meet their individual high-availability needs.
Powered by Sun's advanced SunPlex technology - a clustering platform delivering continuous and rapid access to data, devices and the network - Sybase's enterprise-class database offers customers increased service levels with minimised risk.
"In today's highly competitive business climate, e-business environments must be available to customers, suppliers, partners and users 24 hours a day, seven days a week," says David Nelson-Gal, VP High-Availability products, Sun Microsystems. "Sybase ASE's support of Sun Cluster will give customers both business continuity and ease of management, helping them to lower overall TCO."
The active-active agent allows Sybase ASE deployments to achieve the highest levels of availability by enabling two Sybase ASE servers to work together to produce a "hot standby" capability.
Accordingly, either server can simultaneously handle transactions while performing a fast recovery on the companion server should it go down, further reducing unplanned downtime. An active-passive agent, previously available to ASE 12.0 clients using Sun Cluster 3.0, is a solution that monitors the health of the Sybase ASE in the SunPlex environment. The agent automatically detects if the Sybase ASE server fails and re-starts the server or fails over to a backup node in the SunPlex environment. With Sybase ASE 12.5.0.3, customers are able to choose the agent option that best suits their IT architecture and business needs.
"High, even continuous availability, is no longer the sole preserve of the mainframe and proprietary world," comments Julie Tomlinson, sales and marketing manager for Sybase South Africa. "The combination of Sybase ASE and Sun Cluster makes 24x7 computing both affordable and open standards-based."
Key benefits of the SunPlex environment for Sybase include:
* Higher service levels, with client-transparent recovery from hardware/software component failures, meaning clients never have to reconnect;
* Simplified management of the entire infrastructure, thus reducing deployment and ongoing costs;
* Joint Sun and Sybase support for customers via the Sun Vendor Integration Program (SunVIP)
