Sybase releases PowerDesigner 12.0

Enables enterprises to easily build or re-engineer business applications quickly, cost-effectively and consistently
Johannesburg, 31 Jan 2006

Sybase, Inc, a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, unveiled Sybase PowerDesigner 12.0, an all-in-one modelling and design solution for enterprises that need to build or re-engineer business applications quickly, cost-effectively and consistently.

Gartner Dataquest has recognised Sybase PowerDesigner as the worldwide market share leader in application development database design software for 2004 based on new licence revenue, reaching 33.7% of market share.

"With this new release, PowerDesigner enables enterprises to more easily visualise, analyse and manipulate data, process and application metadata," comments Johan Reynders, general manager at Sybase SA.

"This is achieved via features such as unique metadata mapping and integration technologies for enterprise architecture frameworks, unmatched customisation for enforced compliance to company or regulatory standards, and a more powerful report generator.

"PowerDesigner 12.0 includes many news features that allow for improved business optimisation and technical excellence," adds Reynders. In terms of the business value, the improved data modelling and process modelling integration facilitates greater synergy between business application descriptions and information systems. The software also enforces standards and practices automatically for greater compliance through the most comprehensive customisation facility to date, while also being fully adaptable to enterprise architecture frameworks to adhere to multiple industry, custom or adapted standard sets.

On the technical side, the enriched user interface is customisable to simplify development for the novice user, without taking power away from the advanced user. Moreover, PowerDesigner 12.0 includes a more powerful report generator, including new report wizards, list-based reports, more expressive RTF and HTML formats and support for some of the latest standards including Unified Modelling Language (UML) 2.0, Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN), latest Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) versions and more. "Further importing features makes making migration from legacy data modelling tools smooth and intuitive," Reynders adds.

According to the Gartner, Inc report, "Trends in Modelling and Metadata Management, 2006", by Michael J Blechar, December 2005: "Historically, modelling tools for data architects, developers and business analysts were purchased separately, with little concern about integration or sharing. However, organisations are increasingly demanding more-integrated suite solutions that enable everyone involved in modelling different aspects of the enterprise architecture to work in a shared environment, and the vendors are responding."

"Thanks to our integrated capabilities, Sybase PowerDesigner users are able to connect all the metadata and optimise business and IT alignment. As applications evolve into more complex application platforms, this design and analysis capability is becoming a critical requirement," said Dimitri Volkmann, worldwide product line director, Sybase Information Technology Solutions Group. "As an enterprise modelling tool, PowerDesigner allows business and IT professionals to map out the dependencies between the business and IT development, enabling quicker, more predictable and more accurate responses to business changes."

When Nielsen Media Research, a leading provider of television audience measurement and related services, began using PowerDesigner they were able to produce reports of current business in minutes in what used to take days with greater accuracy and integrity compared to the typical "interview and develop" approach.

"The Enterprise Business Architecture at Nielsen is based on the Zachman Framework. PowerDesigner's unique metadata management capabilities made it possible for us to implement a meta-model that supports each cell of the framework and to integrate the actual models across the framework's rows and columns," said Michael Pemberton, manager, Business Architecture Core IT at Nielsen Media Research. "Thanks to PowerDesigner 12.0's flexible and adaptive architecture, we have had the most useful and successful implementation of the framework to date."

The Sybase Developer Network (SDN) offers in-depth support to help developers get the most from PowerDesigner and other Sybase tools through free trial software, technical information, and collaboration with other Sybase developers. SDN continues to expand developer services including CodeXchange, where developers can work together on open source code or start collaborative projects with their peers.
