Symantec joins 3PAR

Johannesburg, 27 Oct 2008

3PAR, a provider of utility storage, has announced the development of Veritas Storage Foundation, a project, with Symantec, which will develop file system-level intelligence to optimise storage utilisation.

Jeff Boles, senior analyst and director at Taneja Group, said: “3PAR has taken a step in the evolution of thin provisioning, eliminating the chances that file system formats, consumption and deletion over time can affect the ability to capacity-optimise storage.”

The Veritas file system technology will enable information to autonomically reclaim unused space within thinly provisioned virtual volumes, said Symantec. In addition, the technology will maintain high capacity utilisation without impacting host applications.

Josh Kahn, senior director of project management at Symantec, said: “The integration of Storage Foundation from Symantec, with the InServ family of utility storage arrays from 3PAR, is an exciting prospect for centres looking to maintain high capacity utilisation and simplify centre operations through infrastructure automation.”

Kahn added: “3PAR pioneered the use of thin provisioning with its utility storage arrays and now, through this joint effort, Symantec is pioneering the use of thin technologies with host file systems.”

The Veritas file system will reduce IT costs and will increase written capacity utilisation by up to 75%, said David Scott, president and CEO of 3PAR.
