Symantec to offer first combined e-mail security, availability solution

Symantec addresses critical corporate risks by keeping messaging systems running, protected and compliant
Johannesburg, 17 Aug 2005

Symantec has announced the launch of its first combined e-mail security and availability solution since its merger; establishing Symantec as one of the only companies addressing the full range of business and IT needs around keeping messaging systems and data secure and readily available.

Symantec E-mail Security and Availability provides a solution designed to drive down customer costs by reducing spam, stopping viruses, automatically managing the lifecycle of e-mails through archiving and helping to keep customer's e-mail infrastructures resilient against failure.

"Symantec is determined to ensure its customers achieve higher levels of security and availability around critical information systems, including e-mail, as it has become the primary form of business communication," said Patrick Evans, regional director, Symantec sub-Saharan Africa. "The merger has placed Symantec in the enhanced position of being able to providing customers with comprehensive layers of protection and response needed to minimise the risk of failure, as well as give customers the confidence that - should disruption occur - systems can be restored rapidly and securely."

E-mail Security and Availability from Symantec helps customers meet internal business and external regulatory requirements for the management of corporate data stored in e-mail. Organisations across numerous industries are under increasing pressure to demonstrate active retention and supervision of their e-mail traffic. Symantec E-mail Security and Availability ensures e-mail systems are secure and allows companies to improve the management of e-mail to reduce the costs involved in the legal discovery of e-mail, as well as control information being distributed both internally and externally.

"To maximise e-mail's value, control its rising cost and reduce vulnerabilities; IDC believes organisations need to look at e-mail as an end-to-end process. This holistic approach demands a comprehensive e-mail solution that enhances security and increases availability," says Chris Christiansen, vice-president of security products and services, IDC. "This requires an information integrity strategy that integrates e-mail security with archiving and policy-driven storage management."

Symantec E-mail Security and Availability also significantly reduces the cost and time of migrating to newer versions of Microsoft Exchange. As enterprises use e-mail as a primary communication and document sharing and management tool, any problems encountered during the process of migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 could result in the loss of critical business records. E-mail Security and Availability ensures data security and protection, while reducing the time and cost of migration - recovery takes minutes instead of hours.

"Symantec and Microsoft have worked together for many years to help customers secure their messaging and collaboration systems," said Dan'l Lewin, corporate vice-president, developer and platform evangelism group, Microsoft. "The Symantec e-mail security and availability products that are built on the Microsoft platform are designed to help Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 customers upgrade to Exchange Server 2003, offering our mutual customers enhanced data protection and accessibility."

Symantec E-mail Security and Availability offers customers a comprehensive, best-of-breed solution to ensure the security of e-mail information and the availability of their mission-critical e-mail system. Gartner has placed Enterprise Vault in the Leaders Quadrant of its Magic Quadrant for E-mail Active-Archiving, 2005 and Symantec Mail Security in the Leaders Quadrant of its Magic Quadrant for E-mail Security.
