Internet security technology company Symantec`s net income for its fiscal fourth quarter rocketed from $5 million to $68 million, while revenue for the period increased 26% to $390 million.
"This is a strong final quarter that closes an exceptional year for Symantec," says chairman and CEO John Thompson.
"Both the quarter and the year came in well ahead of expectations with record revenue and earnings during very challenging times."
Revenue for the year to 28 March rose 31% from $1.07 billion to $1.41 billion, while full-year net income of $248 million compares with a net loss of $28 million the previous year. The latest net income figure includes the amortisation of acquisition-related intangible assets and one-off charges for the fourth quarter.
Fourth-quarter earnings per share (EPS) rose from $0.03 to $0.41, while full-year EPS of $1.54 compares with a net loss per share of $0.20 in fiscal 2002.
Symantec`s worldwide enterprise security business grew by 32% compared with the year-earlier quarter and accounted for 41% of total revenue. The consumer business, which also grew 32%, accounted for 43% of total revenue.
International revenues represented 51% of the total in the quarter, with sales in Europe, Middle East and Africa growing 36% year on year. US sales grew 23%.
The group expects revenue for the first quarter to 4 July this year to reach $370 million to $390 million, while revenue for the full year is expected to be about $1.65 billion.
