Synapsys has been appointed the official SA representative of Denmark-based nVentiv A/S, makers of the legendary Prometeia Mach II phase-change CPU cooling system which powers the world's fastest personal computers.
The company says it has already taken a number of orders from local users, with first customer installations in early February.
Vapor-phase technology - also used in the fastest mainframe servers and supercomputers - chills the PC's CPU to sub-zero temperatures, allowing much higher performance than is otherwise possible with conventional air or water cooling.
Synapsys has positioned itself as the country's specialist distributor of advanced PC cooling solutions from a number of leading manufacturers, including Koolance and Asetek. It also distributes backup and system management software from US-based Acronis Inc.
"Heat is often the source of many system woes. Current heatsink-and-fan coolers are far from efficient - and extremely noisy," says Arthur Williamson, Synapsys MD. "Because of the massive heat generated by fast CPUs, chip manufacturers such as Intel and AMD keep clock speeds very low in order to manage the high thermal loads. Today's CPUs can go much faster, but heat is the real obstacle.
"Conventional air-cooling means there's a trade-off between performance, heat, noise and system reliability - with performance usually taking the back seat," Williamson says. "Phase-change cooling solves all these problems, permitting today's chilled CPUs to perform at the same or higher speed than air-cooled CPUs still a year or more in the future - and with increased reliability," Williamson claims.
"This allows compute-intensive users to get tomorrow's performance at today's CPU prices. And the same can be done with future CPUs, so the user is always a generation ahead in terms of actual performance," Williamson says.
Phase-change cooling works by chilling the PC's CPU to sub-zero temperatures, enabling performance improvements of up to 40% with complete stability. PCs utilising the Prometeia Mach II cooling unit have consistently powered the world's fastest PCs, setting speed records with the latest generation of chips from Intel and AMD, the company claims.
The Prometeia Mach II is targeted at high-performance workstation users with compute-intensive applications such as CAD, digital video and imaging, GIS, and publishing, for example. It is already in use at most aerospace and automotive manufacturers, as well as in the telecommunications, resources, financial and energy sectors.
It is also the dream system for computer hobbyists who like to overclock their systems to squeeze out every ounce of performance.
