Conventional training courses offer a complex series of modules that try to teach trainees as much as they can about a product or technology without considering the person`s existing skills, experience, or even how much they can really learn in a short period. The latest computer-based training (CBT) from NETg, represented in South Africa by ADvTECH Skills, addresses this problem by allowing organisations to select which modules trainees should receive according to their existing skills and corporate needs.
The tool providing this service, NETg Learning Objects+ (NLO+), enables corporate education departments to customise courses based on selecting only the objects employees need from NETg`s range of technology based training (TBT) courses.
Says Mike Pitsillis, general manager of ADvTECH Skills: "NLO+ takes the acclaimed architecture of the NETg courses and breaks it up into objects. This allows customers to create their own course, still retaining the architecture, as well as the pre- and post training assessments. For instance, while corporates would probably train their staff on Word, Excel and PowerPoint, they would most likely not be interested in all the elements of each of those packages. With NLO+, they can select only those essentials that are most relevant to their organisations.
"Many corporations are going the intranet route as far as training their staff is concerned," continues Pitsillis, "and require that the training programme selected meets the National Qualification Framework (NQF) competency requirements. Each object selected with NLO+ will address a competency."
The more relevant to the learners` needs training is, the more effective it will be. Just-in-time, relevant learning created using NLO+ will enable organisations to resolve training issues successfully. Organisations are now able to produce company or task specific IT training in minutes, without the need for using complex authoring or development software. The tool also makes it possible for staff to learn while they work, taking bite-sized pieces of training as and when they need it. This means the skills gap can be bridged by allowing employees to learn task-specific skills in their own time, without a negative impact on their productivity.
Nigel Howarth, vice president of global marketing for NETg adds: "NLO+ gives businesses the power to deliver just the right amount of instruction, at just the right level, and in context with the company`s culture and business processes. NLO+ is a solution that brings total flexibility to TBT."
NETg has introduced the NETg Learning Objects architecture to all its courses, transforming them to object-based courses made up of several independent items. A simple drag and drop approach ensures companies can make their desktop and professional IT skills completely relevant to their own environments.
