Talking Blue Train: Where wireless is more

Johannesburg, 28 Aug 2003

These days you can stay in touch wherever you happen to be - even if you happen to be gliding from Johannesburg to Cape Town on The Blue Train.

Via a corporate family tree that includes technology giant Plessey, Tellumat Telecoms has leveraged over three decades of hi-tech capability to deliver communications solutions that take seamlessness and simplicity to new levels of sophistication. Making it possible for executives to operate more effectively and more profitably regardless of where they choose to work. And ushering a refreshing sense of control into an increasingly customer-centred, communications rich business world.

Tellumat Telecoms, together with Transtel and Spoornet, were responsible for linking up The Blue Train with the rest of the outside world, delivering on a par with what you`d find in the plushest corporate turf of Sandton or Manhattan.

"As a proven competitor in the market, Tellumat will continue to innovate, refine and supply world leading PABX and switching products, as well as customer tailored solutions and services," says Lloyd Marshall, Marketing Manager for Tellumat Telecoms.

"New generation PABX products and technologies complement our company`s rich offering, providing a complete communications solution."

Tellumat`s products have been distributed by SA`s largest telecommunications service provider on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis, making Tellumat one of the most important suppliers of communications products in southern Africa. Tellumat`s recently launched flagship product, the Convergence PABX, is distributed throughout Africa under the Tellumat brand.

So how then, would this communications solutions provider begin to lay on full connectivity for the staff and patrons of SA`s premier leisure travel experience, namely The Blue Train?

"Quite simply, our engineers work on the premise that one size doesn`t fit all," says Marshall.

"We start with your needs and try to understand the business you are in. We need to speak your language in order to adapt our technologies to provide you with a communications system which is seamless and intuitive."

Marshall cites the increased mobility of the current executive style of working as being a key market motivator for certain innovations in communications. The Blue Train runs communications via Tellumat`s Convergence PABX system, which is fitted with a wireless system known as DECT, or Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephony.

DECT routes calls to parties who need to be contacted on their normal extensions, but who generally will not be seated at their workstation or designated place of contact. So DECT enables "roamers" to be contacted anywhere within the organisation or establishment. In the case of The Blue Train where reticulation is difficult, DECT is the perfect solution. Staff are able to make use of remote DECT phones as they work up and down the train, while passengers enjoy the use of fitted telephones in their suites.

"We supply solutions that make communications pass more smoothly and more intelligently at every juncture. Thanks to Tellumat`s intimate knowledge of the communication industry and the technology available, we`re continuously developing innovative software and networking solutions in order to supply our clients with no-nonsense solutions," says Marshall.

The company supplies sustainable and complete communications systems to its customers, configuring new innovations in hardware and software with existing infrastructures. By working in partnership with customers, it has secured mutually profitable relationships both locally and abroad, year after year.

Marshall refers to Tellumat`s Callsuite platform which combines messaging, management and configuration in one unified offering. For any company investing in a convergence system, today`s menu includes a tempting line-up of add-ons, such as the Calldirector Unified Messaging system, for example. This is a system which routes all voice, fax and electronic messaging through one central point, meaning that a business executive can sit down at his or her laptop and retrieve and send faxes, e-mail and voice messages from one mailbox. The intention is to reduce the chaos inherent in the breadth of media choices. "Communication needs to become much simpler, much more intuitive," says Marshall.

Another new generation solution is Tellumat`s Callaccounts communication management system, a software product that provides centralised control of all phone, Internet, e-mail and SMS costs. In other words, communications management at a glance.

Proactive management of communications systems is important. Tellumat provides network management systems which monitor the performance and health of its convergence PABX systems remotely.

"We let our customers know how they can improve service and save money, and can even identify possible faults before they manifest themselves. Our managed services offering is another way of taking the hassle out of communication so that our customers can do what they do best, their core business."

In the case of The Blue Train, it`s making the journey thoroughly more pleasurable than even the destination.
