Tally printers make an impact

Johannesburg, 07 Oct 2003

After storming the line-printer rankings in the latest BMI-TechKnowledge Quarterly Printer Market Tracker, Tally impact printers have also come out on top in a number of the dot matrix categories.

"In the market segment for printers producing speeds of 500 characters per second (cps) or more, Tally commanded 44% market share, more than double its nearest competitor," says David Terry, GM, TallyCom, local Tally vendor. "Tally sales also garnered over 46% of this segment`s total value for the second quarter."

In the category for 9-pin dot matrix printers delivering speeds of 350cps to 499cps, Tally again took the honours.

"Not only did Tally printers win in this segment, but we took 50.6% of the sales, more than half the market share," adds Terry. "Our closest competitor only managed to achieve a 26% share of the market."

Terry adds that the Tally T2240/9 and T2340/9 range of dot matrix printers were the reason for this success. "More than half of the 9-pin dot matrix printers sold in this segment were Tally T2240s, known for their superior performance, reliability and service infrastructure."

Looking at the 24-pin dot matrix section, Tally finished second with just over 32% market share. When combining sales for all dot matrix printers in this speed segment, Tally commands almost 47% market share and a contribution of over 36% to the market value share.

However, it is in the 24-pin category for impact printers delivering over 500cps that Tally really showed its class and dominated, gaining 84.6% market share, its two other rivals not even managing to reach double figures.

"It is evident that corporate buyers are more interested in the quality and long-term performance they get from their printers than an easy buy at the lowest purchase price," Terry concludes. "Total cost of ownership has become the selling point of printers, and Tally is proving a winner."
