TallyCom announces arrival of DEC compatible printers in local market

Johannesburg, 03 Apr 2005

TallyCom, local representative of the TallyGenicom brand, has announced the availability of a range of dot-matrix printers, specifically aimed at local customers using DEC/Compaq powerhouses in their back-end IT environments. "A little known fact in the local market is that Genicom acquired DEC`s printing division in 1997, a year before DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) was acquired by Compaq and later merged into HP," explains David Terry, GM of Tallycom.

"What this means is that since 1997, Genicom, now part of TallyGenicom, has been the primary engineering centre for the DEC LA printer emulation and the only supplier in possession of the most current and complete range of DEC compatible printers in the market," he continues.

Looking at each product specifically, Terry says it`s obvious that DEC users will benefit from the added functionality and performance.

"The narrow-carriage LA36N and wide-carriage LA36W are ideal for use in a broad range of industries, ranging from banking to data processing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, education, and government. Versatile paper handling features allow for either rear or bottom paper feed, as well as push or pull tractor feeds. This range also features automated paper detection (top-of-form, edge detection, and form identification) to ensure trouble-free operation.

"The 24-pin print head used on the LA36 range also produces clear, crisp output of texts and graphics. With support provided for DEC ANSI, IBM ProPrinter X24e, and Epson ESC/P2 emulations, customers are assured of perfect compatibility with virtually any system in existence," Terry says.

The LA36 range is capable of printing at 360 CPS (characters per second) and handles an average workload of 670 PPD (pages per day).

Moving a little further up the rung, the LA550N and LA550W are highly featured, reliable and stylish machines, centered on delivering the best combination of performance, workload, ergonomics, maintainability and price. "The LA550 range supports both continuous and cut forms which are fed through the front of the units, ensuring that paper loading is quick and easy and that a straight paper path is maintained. This results in reliable paper transportation, even on 6-part stock," Terry adds.

"This range is at home in the computer room, data processing room, or in the office, with an unobtrusive 52dBA acoustic rating resulting in a printer which is much quieter than the competition."

Print speeds on these models weigh in at 750 CPS, with a workload of 26 000 pages per month.

Looking at the real workhorses, namely the LA650 and LA800, Terry says these models are undoubtedly at the pinnacle of serial impact printing, representing the peak of performance in their respective speed segments. "Apart from being the fastest in their class, these printers guarantee reliability, even under heavy workload conditions. Results are crisp, sharp, and perfectly legible, thanks to the 24-pin print head. The fully automatic operation instils operator confidence and virtually eliminates errors caused by poor user intervention."

The LA650 and LA800 are capable of print speeds of 900 and 1100 CPS, and workloads of 40 000 and 50 000 pages per month respectively.

"With this latest set of announcements, DEC/Compaq users have been given the ability to replace their aging printers with the most up-to-date models, ensuring faster print speeds, higher reliability, less noise and most importantly a wide range of consumables to choose from," Terry says.

"The availability of these units also bolsters the range available to the channel, provides additional revenue opportunities for resellers and allows for specialised services resellers may not have had available to them before," he concludes.
