TallyGenicom says it remains the leader in line printer technology in South Africa after nine successive years.
With its market share averaging above 60%, the end of 2006 saw the supplied line printer numbers rise to just under the 4,500 unit mark. This figure has been recorded over the past 14 years and is said to be the nation's largest base of line printers.
When analysing SA market trends, David Terry of TallyGenicom says the line printer market has grown by 49% from 2003 to 2006, against all predictions. In 2003 it was forecast that the line printer market would only sell 200 units for 2006, but it realised sales figures of 467 units, and has seen double-digit growth in this segment over the past four years.
Terry cites one factor that is contributing towards this growth as being the use of existing line printer technology for new printing applications. "An example would be the switch from traditional dot matrix printers to the high volume line printers for purposes of generating prepaid to the high volume line printers for purposes of generating prepaid cellular vouchers," he says.
He adds that it's clear that more and more customers are realising the benefits of the line printers being the fastest and cheapest way of putting ink to paper. "For some users and their customers, this has meant a substantial reduction in the cost of sales and a tangible difference to their bottom line," says Terry.
Research since the 1960's, shows product development and manufacturing improvements are key factors needed to deliver the most reliable line printers and products. Terry says the modern line of printers consists of fewer parts, yet they offer improved reliability over previous models.
"The right synergy between product excellence and sound business ethics should realise another good year for TallyGenicom," concludes Terry.
