Tanzania quizzes Bharti
India's Bharti Airtel, which has offered around $10.7 billion for 15 of Kuwait-based Zain's African units, is in talks with Tanzania's government over its stake in Zain Tanzania, says This Day.
Finance and economy minister Mustafa Mkulo says: “Tanzania's government has a 40% stake in Zain Tanzania, and the government is keen to know the future of the unit when Bharti becomes the new majority shareholder.”
The Republic of Congo says it was not consulted and retains the right to block the transfer of Zain's licence to Bharti.
Nigerian Bill threatens business profit
The Nigerian government is busy with legislation which, if passed, will make it mandatory for companies to pay 3.5% of their gross profit to corporate social responsibility initiatives, states All Africa.
The proposed Corporate Social Responsibility Bill suggests onerous punishments for noncompliance, including hefty fines.
Large companies operating in Africa complain they are already easy targets for governments looking for new funding sources.
Lenovo appoints regional GM
Lenovo has chosen Ali Al-Amine as its new regional GM for the Middle East, Egypt and Pakistan (MEEP) region, reports Channel EMEA.
Al-Amine says his role will be to drive Lenovo's growth and success in the region comprising of 13 countries across the Gulf, North Africa as well as Pakistan.
Before joining the PC vendor, Al-Amine held the position of regional GM of development at investment bank Merchant Bridge.
