New StreamLine SL500 tape library is perfect match for company`s innovative CentricStor virtual tape appliance

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has broadened its mid-range storage offerings with the introduction of the new rack-based StreamLine SL500 modular tape library system and the of a corresponding OEM agreement with its manufacturer, StorageTek.

The modular and scalable SL500 is ideal for use in combination with the CentricStor virtual tape appliance, a key component of the Fujitsu Siemens Computers Dynamic Centre (DDC) concept.

The DDC is central to the company`s commitment to deliver hardware and software architecture for a more efficient, flexible and cost-effective centre.

Scalable from 30 to 575 LTO cartridge slots, the SL500 can accommodate growing data volumes without additional administrative effort. Up to 18 tape drives make a maximum data throughput of 2TB per hour possible. The tape library supports second-generation LTO drive technology, and the forthcoming third-generation LTO drives will enable storage capacity to be doubled.

The StreamLine SL500 supports Unix, Windows and Linux. When used with the CentricStor disk-to-disk-to-tape solution from Fujitsu Siemens Computers, it can also be deployed in heterogeneous environments with open systems and mainframes. As a result, mainframes that are not LTO connectable can also reap the benefits of this efficient and future-proof technology.

"By integrating the SL500 into CentricStor environments, our customers gain the functionality of these tape library systems in their mainframe as well as open system environments," commented Dr Helmut Beck, Vice-President of Storage at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "Customers will benefit from the SL500`s adaptability, reliability and simple scalability. CentricStor allows them to use a single magnetic tape library for all applications running on Unix, Windows and mainframe systems. And in addition to the cost-effective consolidation of tape storage devices, the combination of the SL500 and CentricStor delivers the flexibility needed to keep pace with growing data volumes. This protects investments while at the same time enabling the straightforward optimisation of data centre processes in the spirit of our DDC concept."
