Tarsus anticipates strong demand for Intel wireless LAN offering

Johannesburg, 22 Aug 2000

Demand for wireless networking solutions is escalating rapidly according to Darryl Squara, product manager for Intel networking products at Tarsus Technologies.

"Wireless networking offers far greater freedom of movement particularly for mobile computer users, but the simplicity and clutter-free configuration of wireless networking is sure to be popular with users from the home networking scenario right the way through to corporate users," he predicts.

Tarsus Technologies will shortly be distributing Intel`s recently released PRO/Wireless 2011 LAN PC card and PRO/2011 LAN Access Point products, reveals Squara. "The LAN card is the size of a regular PCMCIA card and, in combination with the LAN Access Point, allows easy cordless connection of a notebook PC to the LAN," says Squara.

The PRO/Wireless LAN Access Point functions as a wireless hub, serving as a bridge between an existing wired network and wireless devices. In addition, the access point can act as a repeater, passing along transmissions from one access point to another, creating a wireless backbone and connecting hard-to-reach areas. Intel wireless access points are simple to install, since they ship with a site survey tool to assist in proper placement for desired coverage and performance. IT administrators can manage and monitor the network of access points remotely via standard web browser.

"The advantages of the wireless LAN system are multiple: users can move about unrestricted with notebooks connected to the network, while adding further network users can be done instantly without any need for rewiring," says Squara. The easily deployed solution offers respectable data transfer rates of up to 11 mbps.

"For instant networks in historic buildings, leased office spaces, and temporary workspaces - where network access may be desirable, but network wiring impractical - the PRO/Wireless solution is ideal," concludes Squara.
