Tarsus beefs up security on IBM products

Johannesburg, 28 May 2002

Industrial espionage is a serious threat to companies and prevention costs are difficult to determine. Tarsus Technologies offers top-notch PC security from IBM at affordable prices to help provide peace of mind.

Companies often need to store confidential information. Product information, schedules and budgets - critical information that must not be allowed to fall into the hands of competitors - is frequently stored on the hard disk drives of companies` PCs.

IBM NetVista desktops and ThinkPad notebooks feature the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem (ESS), an integrated security chip. The IBM Client Security Software 2.0 gives users the ability to encrypt entire folders.

"The mathematically rigorous process of encryption helps ensure that only users with the proper authentication can open the files," says Warren Small, IBM product manager at Tarsus Technologies, the value-add distribution arm of JSE-listed MB Technologies. "Authentication can be made through the use of a password, a hardware key or a biometric device such as a fingerprint reader."

In addition, authentication information is stored within the protected confines of the security chip, ensuring that only those users with absolute authenticity may gain access to the encrypted folders.

With the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem and Client Security Software in place, if a NetVista desktop or ThinkPad notebook is mislaid or stolen, the sensitive files on the hard disk drive will be safe. The same holds true should a hacker find a way into the network.

"This leading-edge technology is only available to IBM and is currently revolutionising their perspective of integrated security," concludes Small.
