Tarsus bundles VMware ESXi with HP G6 servers

Johannesburg, 26 Mar 2010

Tarsus Technologies has announced a new initiative aimed at its enterprise resellers, which sees it bundling VMware ESXi version 4 with all HP G6 series three servers leaving its doors.

While Greg Pothitos, HP ESG business unit manager at Tarsus Technologies, admits that the initiative is meant to be a small reward for resellers who continue to show Tarsus loyalty, the move is more about the distributor bringing the advantages of server virtualisation to its channel partners, cost-effectively.

“The VMware ESXi software is loaded onto a high-capacity 2GB memory card, which can be installed into the G6 series three servers' SD-card slot,” he explains.

“This means that resellers can choose to boot from the VMware-equipped SD Card and begin using VMware to more efficiently manage their servers' resources,” he says.

Pothitos says that even though Tarsus believes it's unlikely that its resellers will make use of ESXi in the long run, since it is available as a free download from VMware's Web site, the solution is more than powerful enough to expose channel partners and end-customers to virtualisation and get them to start thinking about how it can help them get more value from their IT environment.

“Virtualisation is a great way for companies to reduce their infrastructure costs by running more than one server on a single set of hardware, to be more environmentally aware by using less power and to bring a level of flexibility into their IT environment that allows them to move workloads (or virtual servers) to more powerful hardware at times of heavy load, and more power-efficient hardware during relatively quiet periods,” Pothitos says.

“VMware ESXi is also an excellent gateway to VMware vSphere, which delivers improved service levels and operational efficiency by enabling centralised management, live migration of virtual machines, automatic load balancing, business continuity, power management, and backup and restore capabilities for virtual machines.

“Customers simply start with ESXi and upgrade by buying a licence file, whenever they are ready,” he adds.

Pothitos says Tarsus is extremely positive about the effect this initiative will have on the hardware and software markets over the coming months.

“Virtualisation is the clear route forward for all companies' IT environments, and the sooner we're able to get resellers and customers to make the mind shift, the quicker we as an industry can return to offering excellent value,” he concludes.
