Tarsus configuration centre reaches quarter-million PC mark

Johannesburg, 05 Oct 2005

Tarsus Technologies has announced a significant milestone with regards to its in-house configuration centre, stating that in the past five years the company has configured and supplied over 250 000 computers to its reseller base.

Says Valentinos Eleftheriades, general manager of technical services at Tarsus: "There`s a great sense of accomplishment in reaching a milestone like this. Taking our humble beginnings into consideration, it`s rewarding to see that the configuration centre has grown to such an extent that it`s currently configuring and customising in the region of 7 000 PCs per month. That`s no mean feat for any technical team," he affirms.

Tarsus`s configuration centre has been running for a little over seven years now and during that time has experienced exponential growth, starting out with a staff complement of four members and today employing a total of 30 engineers.

These engineers are focused on configuring computers to the exact specifications of the resellers, rolling out customised software images and fulfilling vital tasks for the corporate market, like asset tagging.

"Since the inception of the configuration centre, Tarsus has been committed to delivering the highest standards in terms of its services," Eleftheriades continues. "As such, the configuration centre garnered an ISO9002 for assembly, reworks and customisation certification in 1998 and more recently had this status upgraded to an ISO9001:2000 certification."

Besides offering a huge value-add to the Tarsus reseller base, Eleftheriades says the configuration plays a vital role in Tarsus`s efforts with regards to corporate social investment and transformation. "The configuration centre is staffed by mainly PDI candidates who are technically trained by all of Tarsus`s major vendor partners, notably HP, IBM and Acer."

This, he says, ensures their product-specific knowledge is kept up to date and that they are more than capable of performing the configuration tasks required by the configuration centre.

"After a minimum of six months` training and experience gained within the configuration centre, they have the choice of being redeployed into Tarsus`s dealer channel, the corporate world or elsewhere within the Tarsus group of companies," he explains.

Beyond contracting Tarsus`s services, Eleftheriades says there are many ways their customers can utilise the configuration centre. "The centre is a truly multi-faceted resource for both Tarsus and its resellers," he says. "Customers have the advantage of using the centre for themselves, performing configuration tasks with their own staff at no charge, or sub-contracting the configuration and testing services Tarsus offers."

"Where this becomes particularly valuable," he says, "is when more complex technical configuration tasks need to be performed. In this case, the reseller can either perform the configuration tasks them self or call on a more specialised team from the Tarsus Technical Support Division that are internationally certified."

The value that the configuration centre provides is indisputable. Eleftheriades says additional resources and capital have been allocated to the department for more efficient technology and extra workspace.

"The centre has been upgraded with three-phase power in order to accommodate high-end EVA storage solutions and a broad range of blade infrastructure servers. Extra floor space has also been designated for larger roll-outs, ensuring that no matter how big or small the customer`s requirements, we have the capabilities to meet their needs," Eleftheriades concludes.
