Hewlett-Packard PCs experienced exceptional market share growth in SA during the first quarter of 2002, according to the IDC`s EMEA Quarterly PC Tracker. The mobile market achieved the biggest growth rate, which is indicative of the local market being in line with the global trend towards mobility.
Across all form factors - including desktops, notebooks and servers - HP`s market share grew by a massive 103.2%. Desktops and servers both experienced relatively high percentage growths - 37.2% and 75% respectively - but most noteworthy is the growth of 389.2% experienced in the mobile sector.
"This growth can be attributed to a combination of factors," says Jason McMillan, HP business development manager at Tarsus Technologies, the value-add distribution arm of JSE-listed MB Technologies.
"An average of 30% drop in HP notebook prices and an increased acceptance of notebooks in the small to medium business (SMB) market contributed largely to the large growth in mobile unit sales," he explains.
All-in-one notebooks, which include a stiffy drive and a DVD drive also had an impact on the growth, as did the good customisation of notebooks offered by HP. "The increase in demand for notebooks is also reflected in our unit sales," McMillan continues. "Six months ago notebooks were selling at the same rate as desktops, now mobile sales double that of desktops."
There was also an increase in overall shipments of HP desktops and notebooks, "which indicates that HP`s products with competitive pricing, good service and exceptional warranty support, are what the market is demanding," McMillan concludes.
