Tarsus Technologies has announced that it is taking orders for the new IBM ThinkPad A Series, the first Pentium 4 notebooks for the South African market. The new A31 and A31p machines are a refresh for the existing ThinkPad A series range and will be available from 9 April.
The notebooks feature Intel Mobile Pentium 4 processors up to 1.6GHz on A31 (1.7GHz on A31p) with Intel SpeedStep technology and 512KB full-speed on-board L2 cache memory.
"The A31, featuring Pentium 4 processors, continues IBM`s tradition of innovative desktop alternative notebooks by adding versatility and integrated communications," says Warren Small, IBM product manager at Tarsus Technologies, the value-add distribution arm of JSE-listed MB Technologies.
With the Ultrabay 2000, optical devices, mass storage drives and diskette drives can be freely interchanged, or a battery can be added. The new Ultrabay Plus has additional option capability including a numeric keypad option or a WorkPad cradle option for synchronising the ThinkPad with a WorkPad while the WorkPad charges.
In comparison, the new ThinkPad A31p computer is an outstanding, high-performance desktop alternative with exceptional versatility for mobile users. With its superior performance, function and ergonomic features, the A31p is ideally suited to small businesses as well as large enterprises looking for a desktop alternative with large displays.
"The ThinkPad A31 notebook is targeted primarily at users within all enterprises, as well as individuals that demand the latest technology as well as large screens and full-size keyboards, while maintaining the mobility of a notebook," says Small.
A solid, easy-to-manage notebook that comes with outstanding IBM service and support, the ThinkPad A31 notebook provides full docking support or port replication and the flexible configuring of options in the dual bay design, including Ultrabay 2000 and Ultrabay Plus.
The ThinkPad A31p notebook is targeted at mobile individuals within all size enterprises. Large screens and full-size keyboards, as well as the flexibility of a dual-bay design, are ideal for all users. The 15-inch (1600 x 1200) TFT screen, a generous 64MB of Video-Ram and Video I/O ports equip the machine with the power required by users working in the design and production of digital images and video.
Other features include large hard disk drive up 40GB on A31 / 60GB on the A31p; 256MB of memory on both models expand to 1.0 GB; DVD/CD-RW Combo drive; ThinkLight, which makes it easier to view the keyboard in low-light conditions; a one-year limited warranty on A31 machines; and a three-year limited warranty on the A31p.
"We are taking orders immediately, but a two-week delivery period can be anticipated," concludes Small.
