TCM and Datatex form alliance

Johannesburg, 24 Apr 2003

The textile industry has received a boost in the area of information technology with the formation of an alliance between the country`s leading textile software company and IBM midrange hardware and services supplier.

Datatex is the supplier of TIM, an ERP solution for the textile industry, and TCM is the country`s most successful IBM midrange hardware and services supplier.

TCM, also an IBM Premier Partner, will supply the hardware platform and integration skills as part of the Datatex solution.

Datatex has created TIM, Textile Integrated Manufacturing, as an enterprise resource planning (ERP) application specifically for the textile industry.

There are over 250 implementations operating in 30 countries in 14 different languages. Datatex customers include some of the world`s largest and most important textile manufacturers.

The solution is suitable for both single production-step industries and companies with integrated and distributed processes covering the full supply chain. The software was developed for the IBM iSeries environment.

Worldwide, customers include Berdan Tekstil (Turkey), Fabrica Barros (Portugal), Luckytex (Thailand), Dan River (USA), SBH Cotton Mills (SA) and Frame Group (SA).

"Datatex selected TCM as its strategic hardware and implementation partner based on their reputation as the country`s leading IBM Premier Partner specialising in the IBM iSeries environment," explained Datatex general manager Barry Edwards.

"TCM will also provide complementary services such as disaster recovery, project management, network support, eBusiness solutions and software development," he added.

TCM marketing executive Jorge de Campos said TCM will also provide the hardware and system integration expertise, Internet connectivity and eBusiness development capabilities.

"TCM will provide 24x7 national support that can be customised to meet specific customer requirements through TCM`s five major branches and 19 satellite branches," explained Edwards.

Recently, the research company IDC, revealed that the IBM iSeries, on which the TIM solution is based, enjoys significant total cost of ownership (TCO) advantages over two of the most widely used operating environments running enterprise resource management (ERM) applications: namely Unix and Intel-based servers.

The report shows that the iSeries also enjoys significant productivity advantages. The study found user downtime to be five times less for the iSeries than for comparable Unix server-based solutions and 16 times less than for comparable Intel server-based solutions. Moreover, the study has shown the iSeries` ability to support large numbers of end-users at less cost than the comparable Unix servers - and is able to support more users with higher levels of data availability than comparable Intel-based servers.
