Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the African continent are invited to attend Africa Source II, an eight-day hands-on workshop in Uganda, aimed at building technical skills for people working in the sector.
The workshop is for experienced professionals actively working in the non-profit sector in Africa, with a history of working with service and advocacy NGOs, educational organisations, NGO resource centres, community centres and health information organisations in Africa.
Africa Source II will focus on how technology - in particular free and open source software (FOSS) - can be integrated into the project work of NGOs. Over a hundred NGO support professionals and NGO staff working at the local level across the region are expected at this meeting, organisers say.
The event will explore how technology can best serve the non-profit sector in Africa both in terms of access and content, the organisers say.
Topics to be discussed include how NGOs should plan and implement FOSS applications to increase their capacity, how to use FOSS applications to handle information and publish content and how FOSS can increase accessibility through localisation and translation into local languages.
To attend the workshop, NGOs should submit their applications before 24 October.
The workshop is scheduled to take place at Kalangala Island in Uganda from 8 to 15 January 2005.
