Technikon SA joins up with CompTIA

Johannesburg, 12 Apr 2002

CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, has widened its area of influence among local tertiary institutions. The association points to one of its members, Technikon SA, as a leading example of how much synergy exists in a partnership of this kind.

Technikon SA paved the way for a relationship with CompTIA when it opened a Prometric Testing Centre in August 2001. At the same time the distance education institution decided to explore the potential which it saw in membership with CompTIA.

Says Ruthea Vorster, lecturer and short course co-ordinator at Technikon SA: "We use the CompTIA syllabi in two of our modules namely Hardware Concepts (A+) and Networking Concepts (Network+). These two modules are part of the subject System Software I of our National Diploma in Information Technology."

One of the main benefits to this close relationship, says Vorster, is the fact that international standards of A+ and Network+, as set by CompTIA, are incorporated into the technikon`s national diploma. The institution also receives a discount on examination vouchers of A+ and Network+ testing.

CompTIA`s influence has played a large part in the development of the technikon`s comprehensive IT course and qualifications. At present, Technikon SA offers a three-year National Diploma in IT with specialisation from the second year in several areas. These include Business Applications, Web and Applications Development, Technical Applications and Software Development.

"CompTIA supports the vital process of setting local standards as driven by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The association has a crucial role to play in mapping their certifications to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), allowing internationally certified students to earn local credits," says Vorster.

According to Loraine Vorster, CompTIA Sales and Marketing Executive, the association is greatly strengthened through its partnership with tertiary institutions like Technikon SA.

"It is important that we establish and maintain strong links with our tertiary education partners. There is a strong demand for IT skills, but it is vital that students understand the need to demonstrate a level of skill and knowledge in order to secure employment. CompTIA can play an important part in helping to bridge the gap between educators and employers."
