Technology architecture - strategic or tactical?

Johannesburg, 26 May 2010

The past years leading up to the economic downturn have been tough for the IT industry and have presented new challenges to both organisations and the personnel working for them. While IT personnel face an increasingly competitive job market, many businesses have shifted their focus and resources on the bare necessities of short-term tactical solutions.

Past mistakes have taught us that deploying technology to overcome a short-term problem without a necessary focus on the organisation's long-term goals and vision, can lead to a number of different concerns.

These concerns can include and are not limited to an increase in IT costs and a poor return on investment. It is also known that an approach that only favours an architectural solution can lead to a lower cost of ownership and the inability to lock down specific technologies within the organisation.

Building an adaptable, manageable and sustainable technology strategy would not only help an organisation realise its architectural solution, but would also lay down the foundations required to support the business in the long-term. Coupled with proper EA planning, the business would be able to lower tactical spending and support solutions as defined by its strategy.

Businesses who understand this relationship are able to build coherent strategies capable of building efficient, robust and agile platforms that will not only support the business, but also exploit different competitive advantages within the market.
