TECO turns to CA`s Unicenter TNG for comprehensive enterprise management

Johannesburg, 09 Feb 1999

Computer Associates International has announced that TECO, one of Taiwan`s major electronics and machinery manufacturers, is standardizing on CA`s Unicenter TNG to support its goal of becoming one of the top five motor manufacturers in the world by next year.

TECO, headquartered in Taiwan, is a globally-oriented corporate group, recognized as one of the world`s leading producers of electric motors. Through joint ventures with Ericsson, Toshiba and Whirlpool, and acquisitions including the American Westinghouse Motor Company, TECO has expanded quickly and diversified its operations to include home and office electronics. The company`s corporate offices and production facilities are distributed broadly across Taiwan.

TECO`s diverse enterprise IT environment includes Windows NT, UNIX and mainframe systems which support thousands of PC clients. Maintaining and managing well-integrated, corporate-wide information systems has been a major challenge. To fully integrate operations across the organization and to increase the productivity of its IT staff, TECO selected CA`s Unicenter TNG.

"A company`s competitiveness in the market now depends on the robustness and reliability of its enterprise computing infrastructure," said T.C. Song, general manager of TECO`s IT department. "Unicenter TNG is the ideal solution for TECO not only because of its scalablity and multi-platform support, but also for its excellent network management capabilities, the key requirement for TECO."

The initial deployment will concentrate on Unicenter TNG`s desktop and application management, which provides information management capabilities for increasing the availability of IT resources via network traffic analysis and management for each production facility, as well as Windows NT server, Notes server and PC management. TECO will initially implement Unicenter TNG for performance and asset management and software delivery, and later plans to deploy its remote control option. This first phase of the project will cover file servers and PCs in TECO`s corporate headquarters, MIS department, and four factories.

"In the past, TECO has conducted a manual annual inventory to keep track of all the company`s assets," said Song. "That meant a great deal of time and effort had to be spent on the inventory process. With Unicenter TNG, TECO will be able to automatically keep track of all computer software and hardware information, thus saving time and labor costs. The integration of asset management and software delivery can automate the management of IT resources."

The data collected by Unicenter TNG`s Response Manager will allow system administrators to determine the loading and distribution status of the various computer systems, as well as what kind of support and adjustments are required. Remote control features will allow system administrators to directly manage and take control of an individual user`s machines to solve problems quickly - resulting in a direct increase of both employee and administrator productivity.

In addition to helping TECO address its enterprise management challenges, Unicenter TNG will help the company maintain optimum service levels and cope with the global shortage of human resources. "It was becoming increasingly difficult to bring our complex enterprise under control," said Song. "We have complete confidence that Unicenter TNG will enable us to simplify overall management of our environment with minimum staffing requirements."

According to Song, "Not only will this function reduce the travel time of systems management personnel servicing various nodes of the company and system operations, but it will also make individual users happier because of faster response times. In the future, TECO will introduce management capabilities on the RS/6000 and other platforms, and complete a corporate-wide automated cross-platform management system." "CA`s Unicenter TNG is the ideal solution for customers such as TECO that need a complete, integrated, efficient and reliable enterprise management solution for a complex, geographically dispersed business computing environment," said ReiJane Huai, senior vice president & general manager of CA Asia. "In the future, we expect TECO to take advantage of CA`s Neugents technology to gain predictive management capabilities that reduce computer-related risk to the lowest possible level."

By automatically managing the enterprise computing environment, Unicenter TNG optimizes the availability of business-critical services to help reduce the total cost of ownership. Enterprise assets --including the Internet/intranet and even non-IT equipment, like automated teller machines-- can be managed based on the business processes they support. Comprehensive and integrated out-of-the-box functionality, an intuitive Real World Interface, and self-learning, predictive neural network Neugents technology make Unicenter TNG easy to deploy and use, resulting in a rapid return on investment that increases over time.

TECO Electric and Machinery was established in 1956 and is one of Taiwan`s major electronics and machinery manufacturers. The company`s product lines cover five major areas: industrial electronics, business systems, components, home electronics and air conditioners. In 1998, TECO saw sales revenues of USD 656 million, and employed 3,500 people. TECO received the 1996 National Quality Award in Taiwan. TECO can be reached by visiting www.teco.com.tw
