TelePassport's proactive management of its customers' least-cost routing paid off for a lucky client recently when TelePassport's operational team detected fraudulent airtime usage within the client organisation, and blew the whistle on the crook.
The process started when one of the automatic service alerts triggered on the TelePassport management console, indicating that unexpected call traffic was being detected on a customer's SIM card.
As per procedure, a response technician was dispatched to investigate the problem, but returned reporting everything apparently in order at the site.
However, the problem returned within a day or two, prompting one of TelePassport's operations managers in Johannesburg to investigate the issue more closely.
After forensic analysis in conjunction with the network call records, it was established that the SIM card in question was periodically being used from equipment other than its designated least-cost router, but being returned to the router afterwards to avoid service disruptions.
On the next site visit, the culprit was caught "red-handed" with the SIM card by the TelePassport technician.
Eugene Volschenk, Johannesburg branch manager and ISO9001 quality custodian for TelePassport, comments: "This is certainly not the first time TelePassport has managed to pinpoint fraud and abuse on our clients' telephone systems. However, this particular case is interesting, as the SIM was not stolen outright but instead was used in such a way as to try and conceal the theft from detection. Finding the root of the problem was challenging, but our operations staff are dedicated and determined and our advanced systems gave us the tools to do so. The client, who does not wish to be named, has expressed their surprise, and gratitude to us for saving them more than just the headline margin on their phone bills!"
Volschenk continues: "Telephone fraud in corporates is widespread and very often difficult to detect or trap. However, we have the most advanced management systems in the business, which also carry the weighty distinction of being ISO9001:2000 certified, which means they are confirmed as of world-class standard. The result is, our customers can definitely feel secure and rest easy with us managing their telecom services."
