Telkom goes uncapped

Johannesburg, 30 Sep 2011

Telkom has unveiled a range of uncapped products aimed at the consumer market.

Following Telkom's recent announcement of an increase on the caps of certain existing Telkom packages, the company will now add 384Kbps, 1Mbps and 4Mbps uncapped offerings to the Do portfolio.

Telkom executive for converged business services, Steven White, says the company has been monitoring user behaviour and usage patterns, and while usage has always been well within the bandwidth allocation, it recently noticed this has been changing.

“During our promotional bandwidth giveaway, we saw that customers used the opportunity and they clearly want more,” says White, adding that consumers are becoming increasingly Internet-savvy.

Telkom is relatively late to market with its uncapped consumer products, but White argues it is “not always an advantage to be first”.

White adds that Telkom has taken time to develop its product. “We don't believe in over-contending; we want to provide a quality service. We believe we are positioned and priced correctly.”

Fair usage

White says the products are designed for home users who would spend most of their time online at night. As such, the 384Kbps and 1Mbps products are subject to certain daytime speed restrictions as outlined by Telkom's acceptable use policy. The 4Mbps product is offered without any restrictions.

“The acceptable usage policy is designed to ensure all customers enjoy a quality online experience,” says White, adding that Telkom will not cut off any users and will only take action once user behaviour starts impacting the quality of the service.

Following a three-month, free blended data promotion that was launched in July, earlier this week Telkom announced it would increase the monthly data cap on the 1GB package to 5GB, the 5GB package to 10GB and the 9GB package to 20GB.
