Telkom holds out for Hedberg

Johannesburg, 29 Sep 2009

Telkom is still waiting for turnaround man Jeffery Hedberg to be released from his contract with Saudi Oger.

Telkom announced it had appointed Hedberg to take the helm of its Nigerian operation, Multi-Links, in July. However, in a later statement, Oger explained that Hedberg was being held to contractual obligations, which kept him on the books of SA's third mobile operator, Cell C.

However, Telkom has since been quiet about the hiccups surrounding the appointment. Telkom says the discussions with Hedberg are ongoing and a conclusive date for him to start working in Nigeria has yet to be determined.

“Mr Hedberg has been hired for a position in Nigeria and the date of commencement is currently being discussed with him,” says Charlotte Mokoena, Telkom's chief of HR.

It is likely Hedberg will only be able to take up the position when his official contract with Cell C expires in November.

In an earlier statement, Oger explained that, despite Hedberg's resignation, the company still considers him a full-time employee. Oger's statement also says Hedberg has been compensated under the terms of his contract and will be held to it.

Telkom will be keen to have Hedberg freed of his contractual arrangement as soon as possible, since the company hopes to get Multi-Links into a better position. Telkom's latest results took a R1.7 billion beating from the poor performance of its Nigerian operation.

The company believes Multi-Links will fill part of the revenue gaps left by the sale of Vodacom.
