Telkom and Huawei Technologies will co-host a demonstration of CDMA450, a wireless access technology that could be used to accelerate access to telecoms for people in underserviced areas in SA.
The demonstration will take place on 14 October at Thabazimbi in the North West province.
According to Huawei marketing director David Li, the solar-powered CDMA450 provides for high-quality telephony within a large radius. Li says one base station provides coverage of up to 60km radius, supporting up to 2 000 people. The issue of affordability for the users is also covered by the provision of public payphones, he says.
"We took the unique needs of the country into consideration and then customised the system to address them," Li says.
The use of such technology would allow Telkom to roll-out infrastructure in underserviced areas while saving on cabling investment. The technology also allows for a short roll-out time, Li says.
Huawei has implemented wireless access technology in other countries in the southern African region, including Nigeria and Ethiopia, Li says.
