Telkom installs multimillion-rand Mediation system

Telkom has awarded Comparex Africa and an Israeli-based company, Team Telecom International (TTI), a multimillion-rand deal to replace its current Mediation system, Call Data Record Management System (CDRMS) with a Detailed Record Management System (DRMS).

The DRMS is a very powerful data record (DR) Mediation tool that allows Telkom to collect and mediate the records for traffic engineering, network trending, CDR reconciliation, market, research and network performance, planning, fraud management and billing.

The new mediation system will be responsible for collecting all billing and traffic data from the network elements (EWSD and Alcatel E10 exchanges, VSAT, SS7, IN-Prepaid) and to validate, translate and archive Telkom`s records.

Benefits of the system include near real-time feeding into Telkom`s North Bound Systems, including FlexiBill (FB), Fraud Management System (FMS), Network Traffic Management System (NTMS), Metrica and Precon (wholesale billing).

Comparex Africa expects Telkom to be able to realise significant business benefits, including a significant shortening of time to market for new products and services. It will save costs by eliminating duplication of mediation functions of downstream systems.

"Another cost saver is that enhancement costs usually provided by the supplier will be reduced, as Telkom will be able to manipulate the output format of the DRs by adding/changing/calculating/enriching fields in the DRs," says Comparex Africa Senior Sales Executive for Telecommunications Victor Markram.

Comparex Africa is TTI`s local partner, providing all-important knowledge about the local market and the specific requirements of clients such as Telkom.

Zappi von Plato, regional executive for telecommunications at Comparex Africa, says part of Comparex`s strategy is to have competencies that span the areas of network management, operational support and business support systems.

"We have developed capabilities in all of these spaces and continue to strengthen these skills as we successfully deliver solutions that will give our clients` businesses a competitive-edge in their markets," he says.

Comparex Africa provided project management, design and implementation services, software engineering support, user requirement definitions and support services on the project.
