Telkom has signed a collaboration agreement with Absa - SA's largest bank by customer numbers - making the telco an official partner of the bank's rewards programme.
The partnership, says Telkom, means the company will offer Absa customers rewards when subscribing to Telkom flagship Simple and Simple Uncapped products.
Manelisa Mavuso, Telkom's MD for consumer services and retail, says the company's strategy hinges heavily on growing its channel footprint. "We believe that the Absa rewards platform is a source of quality customers and that their loyalty will give us a long tenure."
Absa claims its rewards programme - a loyalty programme like First National Bank's eBucks and Standard Bank's UCount - is positioned as unlike other bank rewards initiatives, due to the fact that customers "get real cash back" for swiping their Absa card at points-of-sale.
Head of Absa retail bank Arrie Rautenbach says the "exclusive" offer with Telkom provides added incentive to the approximately 1.35 million customers on its Absa rewards programme through a monthly saving in cash rewards when subscribing to selected ADSL Telkom contracts.
He says further savings are to be made when buying Telkom Mobile prepaid airtime through Absa's digital banking channels.
Rautenbach adds the partnership with Telkom represents growth in digital channels, as well as a step forward in addressing consumers' basic needs. "Our new Telkom association makes lives easier by removing some of the connectivity barriers customers experience."
Mavuso says by engaging customers on their preferred platform, the company is a step closer to being a "more accessible organisation".
