Telkom received ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification from German-based DEKRA-ITS Certification Services. The award validates Telkom`s Incident Prevention Plan (IPP), the engine driving Telkom`s safety, health and environmental (SHE) management system.
A recent internal study at Telkom revealed the number of incidents reported per month had dropped by more than 60% since 2000, thanks largely to an integrated management system for managing safety, health and environmental impacts and risks across a wide spectrum.
Telkom opted to contract DEKRA-ITS - in the form of an external audit - to formally verify whether its systems met world-class standards and legislative requirements. The audit demonstrated - through certification - the presence of international systems requirements within Telkom`s IPP and the effectiveness of the implemented system.
Reuben September, Telkom`s chief operating officer, said: "We have now entered the next level, turning our vision inwards to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for staff. At the same time, Telkom is forging ahead in advancing the well-being of consumer and business customers, who are important for the long-term sustainability of Telkom`s business."
Telkom Executive management is responsible for compliance to SHE and for driving SHE as an integrated business imperative. Since its inception in 1999, the SHE Governance Forum has got the basic legal requirements in place, with a standardised preventative SHE strategy and system to reduce the number of SHE incidents to a significantly lower level.
Telkom`s SHE management programme focuses on SHE governance, development and enhancement of SHE systems support, sustainable development initiatives, health profile and employee wellness, specialist safety intervention management including HIV/AIDS and environmental intervention management.
