Telkom showcases communication `house of the future` at INSITE

Johannesburg, 02 Nov 2004

The first International Science, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (INSITE) held in SA showcases a Telkom-envisaged, communication technology-driven `house of the future`.

The exhibition is hosted by the Department of Science and Technology, and Telkom as one of the leaders in the industry has supported this event wholeheartedly.

Reuben September, Telkom`s Chief Technical Officer, said exhibitions like INSITE raise awareness about science and technology to show how integral innovations are to home and business. ICT needs to be incubated, nurtured and promoted.

"Technologies reduce the cost of communication in business and enhance operational efficiency. In the home these new technologies take us beyond television and radio to offer us a better lifestyle from an intellectual as well as a physical perspective," said September at the opening of the exhibition.

Telkom has long heeded the call of President Thabo Mbeki to support ICT development in SA. The company has established 15 Centres of Excellence at tertiary education institutions, for postgraduate students, to focus research and development on communication and allied technologies.

In addition, the company has a Telkom Laboratory that focuses on the development of innovative solutions to solve problems that are peculiar to a South African telco. An innovation centre, called the Telkom Application Solution Centre, has generated a number of innovative ideas for new telecommunications products.

The technological house of the future will show how communication enhances one`s lifestyle, from the fridge that communicates via the Internet, to remotely accessing the microwave to start cooking while on the way home; systems that take the office into the home.

The exhibition runs from 1 to 3 November at Gallagher Estate and the public should certainly take the time to visit the Telkom house.

Other innovations that will be demonstrated are the provision of breeding baskets for birds on overhead communication lines and technological displays to enhance the operation of telecommunications technology.
