Telkom Business Integration Services is demonstrating its Oracle outsourcing solution with partner Sun Microsystems at the annual South African Oracle User Group (SAOUG) conference. The conference takes place at Sun City from 6 to 8 October.
According to Duncan Peruch, account manager at Sun Microsystems SA, the company provides the hardware to support Telkom's outsourced offering.
"As an approved hardware platform for Oracle applications, Sun has partnered with Telkom to provide a complete outsourced solution for businesses looking to improve their costs by leveraging economies of scale," explains Peruch.
He says Oracle is working on delivering the outsourced model as an option that allows businesses to focus on their core competencies. "Oracle knows its technology best, and with focused partners like Telkom BIS, can produce a higher level of service and performance at a better price," he says.
In the US, Oracle provides the full outsourcing service itself. In SA, however, it has elected to leverage the expertise of partners to act as service providers. Telkom BIS is one of these partners.
Andre Schoeman, product manager: managed hosting services for Telkom BIS, says the organisation will offer the local business community infrastructure, hardware and network services based on the Oracle software suite - Oracle9i Database, Oracle9i Application Server, and Oracle E-Business Suite.
"This development is significant for Telkom as it brings many new markets within our reach," he adds.
SAOUG chairman Bryan Roestorf says the demonstration of the Telkom BIS solution is a valuable contribution to a conference programme that has been designed to deliver maximum value to delegates. "This year's conference is geared entirely around how Oracle customers can get the most out of their investment in the technology," he adds.
The Sun/Telkom demonstration is one such indication of better value models for application service delivery, he says.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - "The Network Is The Computer" - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work. Sun can be found in more than 100 countries and on the World Wide Web at http://www.sun.com.
