Telkom expects business and residential telephone services in the Johannesburg suburb of Parktown North to be restored by Sunday evening, following the theft of cables at the corner of 8th Street and 2nd Street yesterday.
Telkom says its technicians are working around the clock to restore the service, which affects around 4 000 customers.
An alert was issued when alarms went off on the manholes housing the cable points. Although private security personnel rushed to the scene, the suspects had already made off with five cables.
The organisation says it has been forced to take drastic steps to secure its network against organised cable and solar panel theft syndicates, including using alarm systems and hiring private security companies to provide round-the-clock armed reaction and patrols.
Telkom says the public can report suspicious activities to 0860-124-000, and as an incentive, rewards will be given to people who provide information that leads to a successful conviction and/or the recovery of the stolen assets.
