Telkom's need of a further eight months to appoint a CEO is ridiculous and likely to create chaos in the organisation, says the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
Thabo Mogalane, the CWU's deputy general secretary, says the organisation has had plenty of time to recruit a new CEO and is very disturbed the board needs even more time to replace ex-CEO Reuben September.
Last month, Telkom announced September's immediate and abrupt departure from the organisation in order to make way for acting CEO Jeffrey Hedberg. This move contradicted a June statement from the board, saying September would stay on until November.
Mogalane says: “Telkom knew years back that September had a fixed contract and the details of that contract's expiry. September also made a statement last year that he had no intentions to renew his contract as Telkom's CEO. Therefore, the Telkom board has no justifiable reason to take another eight months to appoint a new CEO. We believe they had a reasonable time to appoint a new CEO.”
September originally held the CEO position in an acting capacity for seven months after the abrupt departure of Papi Molotsane.
“The absence of a permanent CEO for too long will bring Telkom into chaos - resembling that of the SABC,” warns Mogalane. “We hope that the upper echelons of Telkom will consider this matter and come to a conclusion to appoint a CEO before the ridiculous eight months.”
