Venture Computer, the sole distributor in South Africa for Tally Printer Corp., Europe`s No 1 line printer company and a leading designer and manufacturer of high performance printers for key industries, such as banking, telecommunications and government, today announced that Tesco, one of the UK`s leading food retailers with nearly 600 stores, had enhanced its IT development program with the installation of multiple T6092 line printers.
Tesco also boasts over 10 million registered Clubcard users, which represents around one in seven of the total UK population. Getting all the produce out to each store is a mammoth operation that is co-ordinated from 20 distribution centres and all overseen by a single IT department. Product Requirements The new T6092 line printers will be used alongside existing machines to produce the numerous picking lists and pallet identification labels needed every day. Printing and bar-coding within the logistics operation is seen as strategic as it performs a vital function ensuring that goods reach the correct store, in the shortest possible time. Bar coding is increasingly being used as it automates procedures, limits human error and prevents unproductive stock handling.
The complete Tesco system runs on an Amdahl mainframe with a co-axial connected network linking the various distribution and warehouse sites. This provides a highly reliable level of service, so as new technology is added, backward compatibility for the existing application code is important. Tally`s 6000 series of line matrix printers were identified as the best printers for the time-critical production of warehouse picking labels and reports. Datatrade, a Tally business partner in the UK, therefore developed and integrated a coax interface guaranteeing compatibility with all of Tesco applications and to-date more than 120 Tally line printers have been installed in Tesco warehouses.

The high performance T6092 is one of Tally`s top line printers and at just 52 dB(A) is one of the quietest in its class. Rated at 250,000 pages per month, it achieves a text speed of 1,400 lines-per-minute while in graphics mode it prints 144 inches-per-minute. Its straight paper path, dual tractors, bi-directional paper motion and micro-stepping also ensure a precise paper feed for forms between 8.89cm and 40.64cm wide and comprising an original and up to five copies.
