The Enterprise thin client market weighs in with over 305,000 shipments worldwide in 1H99, IDC reports

By IDC
Johannesburg, 10 Sept 1999

The worldwide enterprise thin client market is gaining weight. International Corporation (IDC) reports it shipped more than 305,000 units in 1H99, a hefty 83% more than during 1H98 and only 63,450 less than full year 1998 shipments. Despite shrinking average selling prices, revenues grew 24% from $155.2 million in 1H98 to $192.3 million in 1H99.

"The thin client market is currently being driven by less costly from Citrix, Microsoft, and NCD as well as the emergence of hardware priced under $500 and application providers. Citrix`s and NCD`s announcements in particular mark high points in the evolution of thin client computing because they further opened the market for these solutions to small businesses," said Eileen O`Brien, director of IDC`s Enterprise Thin Clients market research. "Additionally, because thin clients have been used in enterprises for a few years now, their ease of use, ability to access all types of information, and overall cost savings have been confirmed."

Wyse, IBM, and NCD/Tektronix are currently profiting the most from the market`s surge. According to IDC, these three vendors dominated the market with a combined share of 78% of worldwide shipments and 79% of revenues. Wyse was the overall leader with almost 39% of shipments and 37% of revenues. Wyse`s shipments were close to 200% more than a year ago. Hewlett-Packard also significantly increased its market presence with a 125% jump in shipments.
