The midrange market will stimulate revenues through 2005

Johannesburg, 08 May 2001

High-value media in the half-inch cartridge segment and a greater mix of drives supported by DLT IV media will stimulate revenue growth in the worldwide tape media market. According to IDC, the "street" value of shipments will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 14%, from $3.4 billion in 2001 to more than $5.8 billion in 2005. Shipments will rebound after a slow start. In 2000 they decreased 1% to 105 million, but by 2005 IDC expects them to surpass 143 million.

"Technology shifts to higher-capacity media within the tape market have led to stable ASVs," said Peter Brown, analyst for IDC`s Storage Mechanisms program. "The accelerated shift to midrange technologies will be an important trend for media manufacturers to utilize."

According to IDC, DLT remains the dominant tape technology in the midrange market segment. The growing installed base of DLT4000, DLT7000, and DLT8000 drives has created a robust market for DLT IV media. "DLT tape media will continue its strong growth through 2005 as a result of DLT tape drive integration into libraries and automation," Brown said.

IDC recently published Tape Storage Media Market Forecast and Analysis, 2000/2005 (IDC #B2867), which analyses the worldwide DC2000, SLR, 4mm, 8mm, DLT, LTO, and half-inch cartridge tape media markets. Forecasts are provided for market value, unit shipments, and average selling value through 2005. Regional shipments and market share are also presented.
