Apple's new iBook has grown up. Its predecessor was a funky little notebook placing more emphasis on its trendy appearance than on its functionality. The new iBook features a professional and sleek outer casing, which heralds its functional and capable innards.
The iBook's new sophistication means its smaller size, lower price and lighter weight will be giving big brother, the PowerBook G4, a run for its money.
Designed with simplicity in mind, the iBook features a crisp white, scratch-resistant polycarbonate surface, a handy LED display on the bottom which indicates battery power, and a colourful 12.1-inch TFT LCD display.
"The 12.1-inch display is high-contrast and bright and features a higher resolution than its forerunner (1,024x768), and helps make the iBook only 4.9 pounds in weight," says Laetitia van den Berg, Apple product manager at SDD, the focused IT company in the Siltek Technology Chain Group.
All new iBook's ship with Apple's 500MHz G3 processor. The base configuration includes CD-ROM drive and 64Mb of RAM. The iBook offers a choice of CD-Rom drive, DVD-ROM drive or CD-RW and DVD Playback drive. The iBook ships with a 10GB Ultra ATA hard disk drive, which is more than enough storage even for video. All models feature a 400Mbps FireWire port, two USB ports, a new VGA and composite video output port (for video mirroring on an external display) and an AV port that lets you show your presentations to best effect on a big screen (just add an optional Apple AV Cable).
The iBook, with a lithium-ion battery lasting up to five hours, is the perfect companion for those long meetings or flights to Cape Town.
As with all Macs now shipping, the iBook comes with both Apple's OS 9.1 and OS X preinstalled. This is bolstered by the standard new software such as AppleWorks iMovie, iTunes and iTools. The new iBook is designed to work and play with your digital tools and toys by adding fun-filled new dimensions to your MP3 player, music CD collection, digital camera, DV camcorder, video projector or PDA.
"The new iBook is specifically designed to fit in with the 'no bull' demand from mobile professionals. Smaller, lighter and capable, the new iBook is custom-made to meet the needs of a growing mobile community," concludes Van der Berg.
