The South African components marketplace

Johannesburg, 21 Apr 2005

The South African components marketplace is undoubtedly moving forward in a very competitive way. Today, suppliers are coming up with new and improved products and technologies that are each competitive and cutting-edge to say the least.

Indeed, manufacturers are continually launching and re-launching products to keep them ahead of the game, and while most compete on a level playing field, it`s interesting and encouraging to see that each also offers products that are quite unique to a specific market.

With so many suppliers currently bombarding the marketplace, it can become confusing, but on the other hand it does offer customers, from basic desktop users to high-end gamers, a great variety that is sure to meet most individual needs.

Also, in saying this, when unsure about your potential choices, opt for an IT partner that specialises in its respective field; this will surely put you on the right track.

Now, let`s look ahead at the products that are sure to shake-up the market this coming year:

Gigabyte Technology has launched an SLI (Scalable Link Interface) motherboard which is similar to other high-end motherboards but with one significant difference; it can handle two graphic cards at once, giving you double the performance output on 3D games and applications.

Optical devices will also continue to make some great strides, with DVD writers now burning images on your CDs. Liteon`s recently released 16x DVD Dual Double Layer optical devices, for example, allow you to backup or store up to 8.5GB of data on one DL disk."

The gaming industry also had a few products to look forward to such as dual-core graphics cards, faster memory (as always), and improved cooling and thermal products.

Other product trends include:

* BTX (Balanced Technology Extended) Form Factor chassis, which was introduced as the successor to the ATX and MicroATX form factor - addressing the Intel processor line`s noise and heat challenges. The first BTX mainboards are now available.
* The ongoing prevalence of 64-bit Intel processors.
* Dual GPU (graphics processing units) graphics cards.
