Lenovo has introduced the ThinkPad X1, which it says weighs less than 2kg and boots up in seconds.
Deshan Govender, production manager for Lenovo East Africa, and Henry Ferreira, Lenovo SA manager, were at the local introduction of Lenovo's latest laptop yesterday to offer a glimpse of the laptop.
Ferreira said Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 is a continuation of the brand's 'for those who do' campaign, adding that the aim was to create personalised tools that enable people to do the things they do best.
Govender said the ThinkPad has been designed with features that enable people to use it on the move and is Lenovo's thinnest ThinkPad yet.
The X1's features include 10 hours of battery life at 1 000 cycles, which Govender said will last three years. He added that RapidCharge technology also allows the user to charge the battery to 80% power in 30 minutes.
Govender also noted that the ThinkPad is ultra-portable because it weighs only 1.72kg. He added that its keyboard design is spill-resistant, while it is ultra-sturdy in any conditions because of an interior roll cage and a magnesium chassis.
He described the ThinkPad as “robust” because it has a Corning Gorilla Glass scratch-resistant screen, adding that the X1 has passed eight military spec tests.
Lenovo says its ThinkPad runs on Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 for Windows and can start roughly 20 seconds faster than a typical Windows 7 computer.
According to Lenovo, the X1 stays connected because of Instant Resume, which retains a WiFi (or mobile broadband wireless connection) for up to an hour-and-a-half in sleep mode.
Govender argued that the ThinkPad does not sacrifice many of the desktop features that are often left to enable portable PCs. For example, he explained, the ThinkPad comes with Dolby Home Theatre and a High-Definition Multimedia Interface port.
Intel Wireless Display technology also allows users to connect or stream 1080p wirelessly to a TV or projector, according to the company.
Optional multimedia features include a mobile broadband 720p camera, high-definition microphones, and advanced calling modes deliver clear video calls.
Intel vPro technology, encrypted hard drives with remote management support, and a fingerprint reader with one-touch swipe for power on and authentication also come as an optional extra.
The ThinkPad, which was officially released in May, is expected to be available locally in late July, starting at a recommended retail price of R8 000.
