Third-party support of Liner tape drive

Johannesburg, 05 Dec 2003

3K Peripherals Africa (Pty) Ltd is a leading provider of service in the DLT, DAT and LTO market space. 3K Peripherals is 100% owned by historical disadvantaged individuals, with the head office based in Johannesburg.

Until now, third-party support for DLT, DAT, AIT and LTO technology was non-existent in SA and all units needing repair had to be shipped abroad as damaged stock and replaced with new or second hand units. The Midrand - based repair center, which was opened in January, by (MGX has been sold to 3K Peripherals Africa (PTY) Ltd) targets not only SA but also the entire continent, offering repair, service and maintenance of DLT, DAT, AIT and soon LTO drives.

"There is considerable demand for third-party DLT, DAT, AIT, LTO maintenance and support in Africa," says Kevin Pather, certified Liner specialist, and Director of 3K Peripherals Africa.

"Having a fully equipped repair, maintenance center here in SA means users save on shipping costs, rental of loan units and downtime - factors most companies can ill afford." Failure rate among DLT, DAT, AIT and LTO devices in the field is high. Third-party vendors are restricted from servicing and repairing units, making it difficult for users with units requiring repairs or attention.

In an effort to alleviate this problem, 3K Peripherals Africa sourced international support in the form of third-party maintenance from a prominent DLT, DAT, AIT and LTO service specialist based in Amsterdam. The agreement with the company awards 3K Peripherals Africa the right to repair, maintain DLT, DAT, AIT and soon LTO units of any brand, sold by any vendor.

"The support center offers a 24-hour turnaround time, depending on the severity of the damage and availability of spares for the unit. We are equipped to work on any type of DLT, from 2000 through to the Super DLT , DAT, AIT and LTO," says Pather. The center provides 24-hour telephonic support and does not require customers to sign a maintenance agreement.

It also offers degaussing facilities - Degaussing, also known as bulk tape erasing, removes all magnetic patterns leaving your media in optimum condition for recording.

The degaussing process ensures the user that their next recording will be at its best.

An alternating current (AC) bulk eraser (degausser) is used for complete erasure of data and other signals on magnetic media. Degaussing is a process where magnetic media is exposed to a powerful, alternating magnetic field. Degaussing removes any previously written data, leaving the media in a magnetically randomized (blank) state.

Degaussing your tapes:

* Increases data security.
* Achieves better recordings.
* Eliminates computer viruses.
* Saves money by recycling or reusing media.
* Prevents previous recordings from being seen or heard.

"Most of our customers are fast-tracking their technology and being able to erase cartridges back to a virtually brand new status saves money for other media investments," says Pather.
