Thousands of water bills held up

Almost 70 000 Johannesburg clients could be billed double in March for their water consumption, if they do not check their outstanding balances this month.

This is in light of a "technical error" that has left the water utility unable to print invoices for its customers for the month of February.

Johannesburg Water spokesman Baldwin Matsimela says, while the body is still investigating the cause of the IT glitch, it is related to printing processes rather than the billing system.

"An investigation is being conducted and we hope to know the cause of the problem in the first week of March," says Matsimela. "We should be able to send bills to our customers again at the end of March."

Matsimela says the normal Johannesburg Water revenue queries call centre has been beefed up to allow for people to phone in and check their outstanding water bills. The call centre's number is (011) 688-1600 and it operates from 7.30am to 4pm on weekdays.

"We are advising people to call the contact centre to avoid a double bill in March," says Matsimela.
