Samsung is a company well-known for its attention to detail and the merging of style and function in its product range. And it has seriously ramped up its efforts a good few notches, with the Samsung SyncMaster T220 wide-screen monitor.
Even if you're just a casual computer user, this monitor has tons of appeal, thanks to the new, rose-tinted finish. It's a translucent glass layer on top of the already stylish piano black, giving the monitor's bezel a dark red sheen that is sure to impress.
In summary:
I say: One of the most beautiful wide-screen LCDs I've seen, with impressive performance to boot
Plus: Gorgeous looks, seriously impressive image quality
Minus: Somewhat expensive for a 22-inch screen

Specifications:
* Contrast: 20 000:1
* Response Time: 2ms
* Size: 22-inch widescreen
* Native resolution: 1 650 x 1 080
* Inputs: VGA, DVI
But, even more impressive than its aesthetics, is this monitor's image quality. It sports a native wide-screen resolution of 1680 x 1050, a brightness of 300cd/m2, a response time of 2ms and the incredible figure of 20 000:1 for its contrast ratio.
What this means is that the images on this particular monitor are incredibly bright and vibrant, but not in a way that will offend your senses; rather, you'll get a better picture on the T220 than you would on, say, the 2232BW, another 22-inch Samsung LCD. The 2ms response time means when you're gaming, no matter how fast your games are, there will never be any “ghosting”, a graphical phenomenon in games caused by a screen that doesn't refresh fast enough. This is true of all LCD monitors with response times of 8ms and less, but it's still worth mentioning.
Connection-wise, the T220 sports the usual DVI and VGA inputs, tucked neatly into the back of the screen and covered by a removable, if a little weak-feeling, plastic cover. This means your connections will be out of sight, but putting the panel on and off always feels a little risky. So far so good, however - the plastic is stronger than it feels.
The power switch is touch-sensitive, and the configuration buttons are subtly hidden behind the right edge of the bezel. All in all, the clever design touches, the quality and style of the bezel and the impressive image quality go a long way to making this a highly desirable monitor, whether you're office bound or a committed gamer, or you just want a stylish wide-screen LCD to adorn your study desk.
Sure, all this greatness will cost you almost R3 500, but having experienced its greatness up close and personal, we can confidently say the quality is worth the price.
