Tigers Eye rolls out 55 stores with UCS

Johannesburg, 20 Jan 2003

Specialist tourist retailer, Tigers Eye, part of the listed Tourvest Group, is to spend R2 million rolling out the Windows-based ActiveRetail software solution from UCS Software.

The installation will cover all 55 of the Tigers Eye stores as well as providing a head office component. The support will be provided by UCS Software partner, SBS.

Tigers Eye caters for the defined needs of tourists via outlets in the airports, hotels, national wildlife parks, upmarket shopping centres and high street retail locations. The outlets trade under the brand names Out of Africa, The Kirstenbosch Shop, African Eco, Indaba, The Parks Shop and African Origins.

Commenting on the installation, IT Manager Sean Carbutt said the company needed to replace its outdated DOS-based system.

"Following rapid expansion over the past six years, we require a far more sophisticated system and it was decided that Microsoft SQL server was the best overall database solution. After researching and extensively testing various retail software options, we came to the conclusion that ActiveRetail, which is entirely Microsoft-based, was the optimum product for our needs. It has the features that we require and is robust and flexible. It also has the scalability to grow with us as we expand locally and possibly even internationally."

Carbutt added: "ActiveRetail is ideal in that it gives us the type of business information we require to run an enterprise with some remote outlets spread across the region including Zambia. The price is attractive and it comes with the backup support of UCS`s business partner, SBS, who have extensive experience in the `specialised needs` retail sector."

UCS Software, formerly known as Ultimate Connection, has been in business for 15 years and was recently acquired by the JSE-listed UCS Group.
